I love walking and have walked everywhere in San Francisco (with help of our bus and subway system) as I don’t keep a car. It was my best exercise as I can control the pace - strolling, walking, brisk walking, slow jogging, etc.
Having a dog helps with making it a routine! I do a 6.30 am 30 minute stomp every morning, it's still a little dark where I live but not long till spring sunshine 🥰
I've been to Europe twice and this was the biggest thing that stood out to me. You can actually live your life without needing a car. Makes me want to pack my bags again and come take a stroll with you in beautiful Lisbon!
Makes sense why all the classic books I read mention going on morning, afternoon, and evening walks. It truly is a timeless activity with many benefits, and one that should be practiced more often :)

It must be nice walking around the Bay Area. Thanks for the comment, Marianne!

Yes, a dog is a great companion for this habit. Too bad I’m more of a cat person 😂
Can i do the morning walk in my apartment, for someone who wakes up as early as 5am and it still gets dark outside?
It’s better than nothing, but you would miss out on the benefits of exposing your eyes to sunlight.
Thank you!
I loved Lisbon when I stayed there for a week, amazing views and walks as you point out.
I love it here. It has a decadent aesthetic.

Yes, you can live without a car, but here I am, with a car, and considering buying a scooter!
And here I am, in America, without a car or scooter (I make my wife drive me around in hers).
But scooters are one of the best ways to explore all the hidden gems of a place in my opinion.
Monsanto - what a beautiful place! Great read, Alejandro! Thank you!
Loved this piece! I wrote about a similar experience I had traveling to south of France...what I call the art of flâneuring:

Thanks Katarina!
I think people watching is also a thing here in Lisbon. People stare at you, especially if you're in a very local neighbourhood.
You put into words something I’ve been thinking for years. Bravo
