I feel that this is one of those innate, primitive evolutionary characteristics that we as a species need to evolve past/improve upon, in order for us to survive and thrive in the long term.
Like for example, while the above type of behaviour makes sense, it’s also important for us to incorporate logical and long term thinking when deciding to act on such behaviour.

We’re lucky to have evolved the prefrontal cortex. This structure does what you described.
